Compression Comparison: Photoshop 6.0 vs. Fireworks MX

For this portion, I compressed each image to the lowest compression level possible without going under 25kb.

While this is not conclusive, my subjective opinion is that Photoshop does a little better at maintaining quality.

On average, the Photoshop image is 954 bytes larger*. The average Photoshop compression level is 36.7 lower than the average Fireworks level. Perhaps this lower number is what leads Fireworks users to believe that they are getting better quality at a lower file size.

* Sometimes the jump in size from one compression level to the next would be several kilobytes, so some of these images are a few kilobytes larger than the 25kb target.
